The Role Every SME Needs
In Part 4, I wrote about how SMEs often struggle because workflows have never been intentionally designed — they just “grew” over time. I know this firsthand.
In project administration, I’ve lived through the friction, the duplicate entries, the workarounds, the endless copy‑paste routines. None of this happens because people are unmotivated. It happens because no one ever had the time or the headspace to step back and redesign how the work should flow.
This is exactly where Mark Cuban’s concept of the “Technical Translator” becomes relevant.
And honestly? The more I read about it, the more I realized:
This role is missing in most SMEs — including mine.
A Technical Translator is…
💠Not a developer.
💠Not an IT specialist.
💠Not the “computer guy.”
It’s someone who understands how the business actually works day‑to‑day — and at the same time knows enough about tools, integration, and AI to see possibilities others don’t have time to explore.
In practical terms, a Technical Translator can:
💠look at what teams really do each day
💠spot the repetitive tasks nobody questions anymore
💠define the outcomes a workflow should actually achieve
💠match those outcomes with the right tools
💠explain clearly what technology can automate and what still needs human judgment
💠help the business avoid buying yet another tool that creates more work than it solves.
And here’s the important part for SMEs:
👉 SMEs need this role even more than big companies — because SMEs don’t have analysts, architects, or integration teams.
If no one plays this role, the company ends up reacting to software instead of steering it.
💠People become the “glue” between systems.
💠Automation stays out of reach.
💠And modern tools — including AI — remain unused simply because no one has time to explore them.
In my own experience, the hardest part wasn’t the technology.
It was simply not knowing:

💠what they can realistically do,
💠and how to redesign our processes so the tools can help instead of block us.
