I recently came across a post in which Elon Musk argued that once you understand the *Kardashev Scale*, it becomes obvious that most future energy generation will ultimately be solar.
At first glance, that sounds like one of Musk’s more ambitious predictions.
Then I stopped and thought about what he was actually saying.
The Kardashev Scale is essentially a way of looking at civilizations through the lens of energy.
Musk’s point is surprisingly simple:
☀️ The Earth receives far more energy from the Sun each day than humanity currently uses.
The more I thought about it, the more it reminded me of inheriting an enormous orchard.
Imagine owning land that produces more fruit every year than your family could ever eat.
Eventually, you stop worrying about whether enough fruit exists.
The conversation shifts to entirely different questions:
➡️How much can you harvest?
➡️How much can you store?
➡️How much can you transport?
➡️How much can you actually make use of?
I think Musk is making a similar argument about solar energy.
The resource itself is not scarce.
☀️ The Sun is already providing orders of magnitude more energy than we currently need.
That doesn’t automatically mean every solar project makes sense.
And it certainly doesn’t mean all the challenges have been solved.
But it does change the nature of the discussion.
👉 Twenty years ago, many people were still asking:
Can solar ever become economically relevant?
👉 Today, in many places, solar is already one of the cheapest ways of generating electricity.
I’ve written before about energy independence, Feldheim, and the extraordinary growth of solar across Europe.
The question is no longer:
Can solar work?
The real question now is:
💥 If the resource is that abundant, how much of our future energy system can realistically be built around it?
To me, that’s the really essential question – and it leads directly to another one.
Because having an orchard and making good use of it are not the same thing.
